California King Bed - Analysis
Genre Characteristics - Pop - Simple colours and movement
Relationship between lyrics and visuals- Obvious relationships with visulas represnting lyrics- see a king bed in the video. She chests close together when the lyrics say 'chest to chest'.
Relationship between music and visuals- Obvious link between the two-soft slow music with white floaty fabrics and slow movement.
Are there close ups of the artist and star image motifs-Yes for both of these- Star image, appeals to the male audiance, presented well. Close up at the beginning 0.37 seconds into the video.
Are there intertextual referances- No
Which category is the video- Illustartion - It is a simple video that shows the story of the lyrics.

1. Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
I chose this text to analyse because it is quite new and I am a fan of the song and the artist
.2.In what context did you encounter it ?
YouTube.
3.What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
I searched for it and already knew the song so I knew what to expect when watching the video.
4.Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
It is obvious a lot of money is spent on this pop video by the outfits and mise en scene e.g settings.
5.To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
It doesn’t – sticks to the conventions.
6.Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
It doesnt.
7.What sort of audiance did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre/style of music)?
I feel it is aimed at teenage girls as I think the song relates more to them than males. It is very typical with the pale pink colours and slow music and movement .
8.What sort of person does it assume you are?
I think it assumes the audience is girly and interested in the artist
.9.What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
Middle class, older teenagers as there is a sexual reference in the lyrics and the video.
10.What interests does it assume you have?
Typical teenage girl stereotypes. E.g Boys
11.What relevance does the text actually have for you?
Personally doesn’t have much relevance, however it is entertaining and the type of music I am interested in.
12.What knowledge does it take for granted?
I don’t think it takes any knowledge for granted.
13.To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the video seeks to position you as?
Very well I think – older teenage girl.
14.Are there any notable shifts in the videos style (and if so, what do they involve) ?
No notable shifts in the video.
15.What responses does the video seem to expect from you ?
It doesn’t expect any unusual or dramatic responses, it is a simple entertaining video.
16.How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways) ?
Not very open to negotiation, it is a straight forward video and I don’t think it could be interpreted in many different ways.

No I don’t think there would be any penalty for not responding in a particular way.
18.To what extent do you find yourself 'reading agaisnt the grain' of the text and the genre?
Not at all, it fits the genre and the stereotypes of the music.

Very typical, it is a straight forward video that doesn’t challenge any conventions throughout.
